Are you a tourist business owner in South Africa looking to improve your establishment’s visibility and credibility? Getting star graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) can help. In this blog, we will guide you through the steps to get star graded by TGCSA, based on their process.
1. Online application process
The first step to getting star graded is to apply online through the TGCSA website. You will need to identify your establishment and settle your account before proceeding.
2. Assessor’s responsibilities
Once your application is received, an assessor from TGCSA will contact you to confirm the assessment date. The assessor will schedule the grading, conduct the practical grading, discuss the findings, and agree on the recommended grading. The assessor will then submit the assessment to the Provincial Master Assessor (PMA).
3. Pre-screening by provincial master assessor
The PMA will pre-screen the assessment and provide a rejection with reason if necessary. The final decision will be made by the Monthly Property Approvals Exco.
4. Scoring criteria
TGCSA uses a scoring criteria system to determine the grading of your establishment. The scoring criteria covers Building Exterior, Bedrooms, Bathrooms, Public Areas, General Facilities, General Service & Service, Housekeeping Services, Additional Facilities, and Responsible Environment.
5. Scoring result
Based on the scoring criteria, the grading outcome will fall into one of the following categories: Acceptable, Good, Very Good, Excellent, or Outstanding.
6. Dispensation and grace period
If your establishment does not meet the Minimum Requirements and Grading Criteria, you can submit a motivation for Dispensation or Grace Period. The Awards Committee will consider each case on its own merit.
7. Awarding of stars
Once the assessment is approved, you will receive an automated approval letter, TGCSA Marketing Collateral, a Printed Certificate, and a Plaque. Your establishment will also be listed on the TGCSA website.
8. Scoring result
After being star graded, you do not need to apply again. However, you will receive a reminder to renew your membership 120 days before the expiry date. You will need to settle the invoice before 30 days and make an appointment with an assessor for the grading.
In conclusion, getting star graded by TGCSA can help to improve your establishment’s visibility and credibility in South Africa’s tourism industry. By following the steps outlined above, you can ensure that your establishment meets the grading criteria and is awarded the appropriate star grading.
